Village Hall

Welcome to our hall. The building was originally a Victorian School built by William Rutson, whose initials “WR” can be seen engraved on the bricks. Following the closure of the school in the 1920’s, the purpose of the building changed to that of a small community hall. Major development took place to expand the hall, with much of the work undertaken by villagers, leading to the reopening of the building in 1996 as a large village hall. Thankfully, many of the original features have been preserved. 

The hall currently hosts several activities, including table tennis coaching, gymnastics, and coffee mornings. Details of all weekly and monthly activities can be found in the News and Views Parish Magazine, or on our Facebook page.

South Otterington, Newby Wiske, and Maunby Village Hall is a registered charity run by a small but willing group of volunteers, all of whom can be found on the Contacts page.

The large 150 sq metre hall can accommodate functions of over 100 people, or can be divided into two with a separate smaller 50 sq metre “meeting room”, and a 100 sq metre larger hall. Both areas have independent sets of lighting, with a choice of fluorescent and/or spot lights. 

There is a new, fully equipped kitchen with double-oven, microwave, fridge, kettle, and water heater. The kitchen is stocked with ample crockery, glasses, trays, and a full range of cooking utensils. There is also a serving hatch to the main hall.

The hall is equipped with WiFi, details of which are available upon hire.

The hall does not have a car park, though there is a small space outside the front of the building which will accommodate two cars.
